Last weekend, a festival for the disabled hosted by a union of several organizations for the disabled was a perfect example of how much joy we can spread by simply thinking in their shoes.
On this day of event, participants with disabilities gained confidence that they can enjoy fine music concert.
The concert was arranged with top-notch performances including traditional dance, story-telling, classical music, and musical provided by EnoB (Innovative Bridge, President Tae Wook Kang). The event was sensational. Those who are dancing in circles hand in hand, those who are expressing excitement by spinning their wheelchair, those who are imitating musical’s main character… Everyone was enjoying the music and letting their imagination run free. Their parents who observed all of these said with tears in their eyes, “we have never seen our children that happy. We never knew, we never knew how much they would love this… We hope an event like this can be held often.”
The disabled became the center of this event not because of delicious food or gifts, but because of the music that guided them on to the stage. During April which is a month for the disabled, I hope that many Korean-Americans set out to understand and find out more about the disabled people’s needs.

매년 4월이면 장애인들을 위한 행사가 봇물을 이룬다. 장애인 기관에 대한 한인들의 방문이 늘고 장애인을 위한 행사가 하루가 멀다 하고 열린다. 장애인에 대한 인식변화를 기대하며 매년 열리고 있는 ‘장애인의 달’ 행사로 4월은 여느 계절보다 따뜻하다.
지난 주말 순복음뉴욕교회에서 열린 장애인 기관들의 연합행사는 눈높이 사랑이 장애우들에게 얼마나 큰 즐거움을 줄 수 있는지를 잘 보여준 행사였다. 이날 열린 장애아동과 청소년들을 위한 음악 및 미술 이벤트 ‘음악아 놀자‘(Let’s Play with Music& Arts)’는 전문가들이 제대로 만든 흥거운 한마당이었다.
이날 행사에 참석한 장애우들은 당연 주빈으로 ‘이노비(EnoB/대표 강태욱)’가 마련한 무용과 구연동화, 클래식 음악과 뮤지컬 등 정상급 공연을 감상하며 ‘나도 음악회에 갈 수 있다’는 자신감을 얻었다. 특히 장애우들은 이날 디즈니 만화영화 주제곡이 연주되자 너나할 것 없이 모두 무대로 쏟아져 나와 흥겹게 춤을 추며 영화의 주인공이 됐다.
‘노래 한 곡이 이처럼 큰 기쁨을 줄 수 있나’ 할 정도로 뜨거운 반응이었다. 서로를 얼싸안고 둥글게 원을 그리며 춤을 추는 장애우, 휠체어 를 뱅글뱅글 돌리며 즐거움을 표현하는 장애우, 껑충껑충 뛰며 뮤지컬 주인공을 흉내 내는 장애우 등 모두가 음악 속에 녹아들어 행복한 상상의 세계를 여행하는 듯 했다.
이 광경을 지켜보고 있던 장애우 가족들은 “우리 아이가 저토록 즐거워 한 것을 본 적이 없다. 저렇게 좋아하는 걸...저렇게 좋아하는 걸... 앞으로는 이런 공연이 자주 열렸으면 좋겠다”며 고개를 돌린 채 눈물까지 훔쳤다. 장애우들은 이날 공연에서 정말 주인공이 됐다. 장애우들이 주인공이 될 수 있었던 이유는 맛있는 음식이나 선물 때문이 아니었다. 바로 자신들을 무대로 이끌어낸 음악 때문이었다.
장애인의 달 4월을 맞아 장애인들이 진정으로 원하는 것이 무엇인지를 찾아나서는 한인들이 많아지기를 기대해 본다. 장애인에 대한 인식변화와 장애인에 대한 눈높이 사랑이 널리 확산돼야 하는 이유는 그들이 우리와 다를 바 없는 이 세상의 주인이기 때문이다.
